Natural Remedies For Leaky Gut Syndrome
When people find my way to my treatments for Crohn’s disease, colitis, and diverticulitis, their bacterial flora is usually unbalanced throughout the gastrointestinal tract. The repeated use of antibiotics (often since childhood) and invasive medical diagnostics alone have destroyed many of the “good” (protective) bacteria in your small and large intestines. When the good, protective bacteria are used up, disease-causing organisms such as yeast (Candida albicans), viruses, parasites, and bad bacteria thrive.
If you have too many “bad” bacteria and Candida yeast in your intestines and too few “good” bacteria, these pathogens break down the mucous membrane and even penetrate the intestinal wall. NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) and alcohol also break down the mucous membrane. As a result, undigested food particles get directly into the bloodstream, where they are perceived as allergens and trigger an immune response.
This excess of pathogenic microorganisms causes inflammation and damage to the mucous membrane, leading to irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, and leaky gut syndrome. The undigested food particles and bacteria that get into the bloodstream can also trigger allergic reactions and infections in other parts of the body, such as joints, skin, eyes, etc.
Natural treatment for leaky gut syndrome
The basic treatment for healing the mucous membrane and creating a protective, healthy gut microbiome is to kill the pathogenic microorganisms (yeast, bad bacteria) and repopulate the gut with beneficial bacteria. While doing this, you can take supplements and drink organic or willow bone broth at the same time to help heal intestinal tissues and restore mucosal lining.
- Kill the Candida Yeast and Bad Bacteria – Use either wild oregano oil or olive leaf extract (both good for IBD) to curb the overgrowth of these pathogenic microorganisms. See my book Jini’s Healing Guide: Natural Treatments for Gut Infection or use Jini’s Wild Oregano Oil Protocol (included in most of my other books) to accomplish this.
- Repopulate with Good Bacteria – Ingesting good bacteria improves digestion, absorption, and excretion of food. Certain strains of bacteria help produce digestive enzymes, peptides, amino acids, and B vitamins for the body. They also inhibit or eliminate pathogenic microorganisms such as yeast, fungi, parasites and harmful bacteria. Do not take the probiotics in capsule form if you have more than 3 bowel movements per day, as the transit time through the intestines is too fast and the capsule may not have a chance to properly dissolve and distribute itself. Ideally, and for the fastest relief, start with Jini’s probiotic retention enema. Then follow up with the oral supplement.
- Use bone broth to heal the lining of the intestines – the high gelatin content in properly prepared bone broth from organic or grazing animals is extremely beneficial for the intestines. Here is more information about the health benefits of bone broth, and you can download this free broth recipes e-book to get you started.
- Use targeted supplements like N-acetylglucosamine, elm, marshmallow root, licorice, etc. to heal the intestinal lining (take on an empty stomach) or use MucosaCalm – all of these combined.
If your symptoms are severe – especially if you have ulcer or bleeding in the colon, the IBD remission diet may be the best way to heal the colon.
The IBD Remission Diet is a comprehensive healing program for colon rest that uses elemental nutrition as the backbone of the program, but it also includes other components that are absolutely essential in healing the colon and bringing about disease remission.
That is why we combine an elementary diet with targeted dietary supplements, homemade broths and natural anti-pathogens:
- An elementary diet – the elemental diet shakes provide the majority of the nutrients and calories and at the same time ensure that the intestines are calm. The shakes must be 100% natural and elemental or semi-elemental; This means that the nutrients are pre-digested and much of the digestive and absorption work is already done for the body. Sufficient calories per day must be consumed to combat malnutrition, promote wound healing, and promote growth in children.
- Targeted Nutritional Supplements – A number of specially selected nutritional supplements must be added to the shakes on a daily basis. These supplements help heal the lining of the intestines, reduce inflammation, repair tissue damage, support enzyme production and hormonal pathways, enable optimal cell function, and balance the immune system.
- Homemade Broths – Those of you who have had my book, The IBD Remission Diet, know that bone broths (which are very high in gelatin) are a vital part of diet and help heal the intestines and the entire body. Sally Euclaire Osborne MS writes about gelatin:
“Scientific studies from the turn of the century suggest that gelatin improves the digestion of grains, beans, meat and dairy products and can normalize hydrochloric acid deficiencies. In addition, gelatin can soothe, protect and nourish the intestinal lining. As Erich Cohn from the Medical Polyclinic of the University of Bonn wrote in 1905: “Gelatine lines the mucous membrane of the intestinal tract and protects against further harmful interventions by the Ingesta.”
Another support from gelatine came in 1937 when Francis Pottenger stated: “Even foods to which people can definitely be sensitive, as the leukopen index and elimination diets show, can often be tolerated with mild discomfort or not at all when gelatine is used as a component the diet.”
Note: When you’ve finished the IBD remission diet, you can continue drinking the broths neat or use them as a soup base for a variety of noodle and vegetable soups or meat and vegetable stews. Use them as a base for sauces and gravies, or cook rice or quinoa in broth instead of water. Work them in wherever you can as you can never get enough of this rejuvenating food!
If you have my books, they have some great bone broth recipes, or you can use these recipes by Sally Fallon – from her cookbook, Nourishing Traditions.
- Anti-Pathogen Protocol – You need to improve the bacterial flora in your gut. You can do this by either just taking probiotics, or better yet, by doing Jini’s Wild Oregano Oil Protocol followed by probiotics.
* Remember that your gut is also affected and weakened by emotional pain, anger, trauma, etc. So also follow methods of healing the mind and body such as craniosacral (level 2 or higher), EFT tapping, or hypnotherapy.
Here’s a free guided healing meditation to get you started:
Also, I highly recommend that you join a free lazer tapping session, which is my version of EFT, or acupressure tapping.
I’ve put this course together to teach you how to be your own healer so that you don’t have to pay a therapist for a session every time something comes up that needs healing.
When I learned to tap, I knocked continuously for 2 years – and 15 years later it is still a cornerstone of my excellent health and thriving. Save yourself the pros for the big things and learn how to heal your own pain, anxiety, fear, worry, etc., as soon as they arise. Come and have a free session with me and see what you think!
