Sometimes we can understand mind/body or spiritual concepts more easily when we see them modeled by someone else. And sometimes when we can observe this wisdom in animals, it becomes a very powerful transmission.
I am the guardian of horses, dogs and cats and am constantly learning from them all. Even wild animals or watching animals in videos can provide greater wisdom or a state of peace. Here is an email I recently received from someone recovering from Lyme disease:
“My partner has commented on how he finds me smiling as I watch your message in your U-Tube conversations with your horses and listen with my heart. Although I have enjoyed your entire herd and family, your horse Montaro in particular has truly blessed me with his assured strength and calm understanding. As he speaks to you and his herd, I feel he is also speaking to me. This year I have met more wild animals on my daily walks than ever before. What a wonderful place and a wonderful family you have created by listening to your horses (and dogs) and learning from each other.”
In this blog post I wrote about how our pets or animals can use their physical bodies to convey emotional/mental/spiritual messages to us. So you will see that this concept that I keep talking about is not only applicable to our healing journey with our own bodies, but the universe can also use our pet’s body to convey messages to us and help us move toward wholeness.
Even though my horse Audelina had a hoof abscess and could barely walk, I used a mixture of DMSO and wild oregano to completely heal her in just three days because we were simultaneously receiving and honoring the MESSAGE her body was delivering.
Luckily, even though I had never treated a hoof abscess before, I had a good understanding of the elements involved from one of my most popular posts on this blog (253,000 views, 413 comments): about natural remedies for perianal abscesses and fistulas. Aside from the location of the abscess, the same principles apply to hoof abscesses and perianal abscesses such as trapped infection, difficulty in treating the inaccessible site, and assistance in draining the infection.
What is the message of a perianal abscess?
If you have a stubborn fistula or abscess, or one that keeps coming back – even after you’ve healed it – you’d do well to take stock of all possible factors – physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. Most people tend to only pay attention to physical causes. I received this question from a reader:
“I was wondering if there was anything that could prevent fistula abscesses from forming in the first place. I’ve read all about curing them. But am I neglecting to get to the root cause? Mine have returned and I’m really discouraged by everything I read.”
I love that this person is asking the right question! As you can see in the video above, the message of your recurring abscess can be pretty much anything that is relevant to your life or the way you are currently moving through life and the decisions you are making. So you have to cast your net really wide, be open to all possibilities and be open to deeper wisdom.
But let’s start with the simple things…
Possible physical causes of perianal abscesses and fistulas
Drug use – I once talked to a doctor who was convinced that many of the medications prescribed for Crohn’s disease and colitis actually caused fistulas as a “side effect.”
Suppressed immune system – Again, we can look at consumption of immunosuppressive medications and all the other things that suppress immune function such as Wi-Fi radiation, foods loaded with GMOs and pesticides, heavy metals or other toxins, factory farmed meat, lack of exercise, poor sleep quality, poor air quality AND stress, just to name a few!

Too few beneficial gut microbes – If your intestinal flora is not good, your mucosal barrier is also not good and your intestinal wall is more susceptible to injury and infection. Don’t forget that a number of medications like prednisone and birth control pills make it very difficult for good bacteria to thrive in your gut.
Pathogenic intestinal flora – Going hand in hand with the above, if you have a lot of pathogenic (disease-causing) microbes in your gut, you are just one short step away from infection. When you take medication to suppress (but not cure) the infection, these microbes have somewhere to go, and then the body begins to burrow through tissue and bone to create a drainage hole for these infectious microbes.
Treating/curing the physical causes of your perianal abscess or fist problem may therefore require weaning yourself off prescription medications (don’t quit cold turkey or you could face serious consequences). And switching to a clean food and happy meat diet. If you can’t afford to eat grass-fed or organic animal products, consider going pegan – where you eat mostly home-grown or organic vegetables and the meat is “spice-sized.” You don’t need a big piece of meat; A few thin slices of healthy, grass-fed meat will do far more good for your body than a piece of miserable factory-farmed meat.
Certainly it involves eliminating gastrointestinal pathogens (preferably with natural anti-pathogens) and using high doses of therapeutic-grade oral and colonic probiotics – such as the Natren brand. NOT a bunch of shelf-stable soil organisms that seem to be in vogue with doctors these days. Also, check the labels of your supplements and protein shakes to make sure no soil organisms (bacillus) are added.
Then, of course, you also need to deliver antipathogenic agents (antibiotics, antifungals, antivirals) directly to the site of infection. This is where my original fistula injection protocol comes into play. Or, as you saw in the video, you can apply them topically and combine them with DMSO if necessary to penetrate deeper into the tissue.
Possible emotional/spiritual causes of fistula and perianal abscess
When we look at the nature of what is happening in the body and where it is happening, we can sometimes find clues or signposts that lead us to where our real problem lies.
A fistula in the spiritual sense They seem to be unhealthy things that are hidden or suppressed. Instead of bringing them into the light or enduring the pain or struggle necessary to heal those aspects, behaviors, relationships, or beliefs, we suppress and push them. Down into deep, dark tunnels, hidden from the light. But the truth is irrepressible, sooner or later it will come to light; The truth will come out. So the questions you should ask yourself are:
What am I refusing to deal with in my life?
What truth or knowledge am I repressing?
What are the five most common things I do to sabotage myself?
What am I too afraid to look at or deal with?
What shame am I hiding from the world?

The spiritual meaning of an abscess – especially if it’s recurring – could be a guide to asking yourself questions to find out what’s going on in your life:
What is the cause of my dissatisfaction?
If I had NO boundaries, what would be my most outrageous dream?
How do I deny myself permission to truly live, take risks, or try things?
What is rotten or festering in my life?
If I gave myself permission to acknowledge my hidden anger…what am I angry about?
If I could eradicate one unhealthy, destructive behavior or belief, what would it be?
When I ask myself deep questions like these, I find it helpful to either meditate first or simply relax in a hot, candlelit bath. Then I pull out my journal and write down my answers, thoughts and ideas. There is an alchemy that occurs when we write things down instead of just answering in our heads.
I would love to hear any insights or thoughts that come to your mind after exploring this method of going deeper into the roots of disease. Remember, you don’t have to use your real name in the comments below – you can share your gifts and still protect your privacy 🙂
