Asparagus salad with tomatoes and basil
Summer is here and we go crazy about my tomato and basil asparagus salad almost every week!
Asparagus salad with tomatoes and basil
In addition to being healthy, this simple asparagus and basil salad is an incredibly delicious keto side dish.
I love my cold asparagus salad, but if that’s not your thing, read on for a great fried asparagus recipe.
Summer salad easy
My asparagus salad recipe is especially delicious in summer when vegetables are in high season.
I found this recipe in Sunset Magazine. Actually, I haven’t found it, our house friend Mrs. Rose introduced it to me at dinner at her house some time ago.
She was so amazing about all of our special diets (my son and I have celiac disease), but more on that in a moment.
Healthy summer salad
We had a fantastic meeting and I’ve been making this simple summer salad ever since.
There’s nothing like a simple summer salad, the bonus is that the ingredients make this summer salad healthy too.

Tomato salad with basil
I love tomato salad with basil, this pairing is such a classic!
My asparagus salad with tomatoes and basil goes a step further and adds asparagus as well as avocado.
Avocado Salad Recipes
Salad recipes that contain blood sugar-stabilizing fat are godsend for those of us on the keto diet.
Whether the avocado is in the dressing or a main ingredient like the Kale Avocado Salad in Paleo Cooking from Elana’s Pantry, this “fruit” makes everything a bit richer and healthier.
Keto supplement
This simple keto supplement is also great for those on a gluten-free diet.
It’s perfect for almost all diets, an absolute win-win because of its flavors – basil and tomato make this salad pop, and it’s something anyone can enjoy.
Salad for grilling
This asparagus salad is summery in a bowl and also a wonderful salad for a BBQ or potluck.
Summer side dishes
On a note, if you have a nightshade allergy, asparagus salad with basil and tomatoes is almost as delicious if you omit the tomatoes and still make a great summer side dish.
And remember, my third book, Paleo Cooking from Elana’s Pantry, is 100% nightshade free!
Asparagus salad leftovers for breakfast
I recently made a huge amount of asparagus salad with tomatoes and basil for breakfast with hard boiled eggs.
Wondering how to make hard boiled egg? Yes, a healthy breakfast is easy when you combine vegetables with a simple protein.
Fried asparagus
This recipe calls for steamed asparagus, but I’ve been making asparagus roasted for as long as I can remember.
The pantry boys also love baked asparagus from an early age. If you’re looking for an easy asparagus recipe, my Roasted Asparagus in the Oven is for you!
Is Asparagus Good For You?
Wondering if asparagus is good for you? Yes, asparagus is a great source of nutrients!
In fact, it’s a superfood full of healthy prebiotic fiber. Asparagus is also:
- Low in calories
- Supports bone health
- Promotes urinary tract health
Why asparagus-piss-smell?
One of the things that asparagus do well is the sulfur compounds it contains. The sulfur in asparagus is also the reason our urine smells funny.
Sulfur is an important compound that is beneficial to our bodies as it helps protect our DNA and is involved in cell repair and rejuvenation.
Does everyone smell asparagus piss? Yup!
Does every pee smell like asparagus? The answer is yes. Not everyone can smell the sulphurous smell urine takes on after consuming asparagus, but fun fact, everyone has this smell.

Simple fruit salad
My fruit salad, the king of summer salad recipes, lights up every table and is a dish for the whole family.
Serve for dessert? Pro tip: add a scoop of my homemade recipe with whipped cream.
Spicy coleslaw
The perfect summer side dish, especially for grilling, is my homemade Spicy Coleslaw.
Larded with ginger and lime, this coleslaw with Asian flavors is a refreshing summer treat.

Cucumber salad in vinegar
Bubby’s cucumber salad is very popular at home. It’s a great healthy salad that I learned to make from one of my grandmothers.
It couldn’t be easier to throw together or more refreshing on summer days, but it’s so good that we have this cucumber salad in vinegar all year round!
Socializing with Diet Restrictions?
So, to something I mentioned earlier here, dealing with diet restrictions when dealing with people. As everyone here knows and has probably experienced firsthand, this can be a challenge.
Things can get a bit tricky when family and friends don’t understand, accept, or respect diet restrictions.
In our case, at the aforementioned social event, we were really blessed as Ms. Rose prepared loads of healthy gluten-free food for us!
Maintain diet restrictions
I think it’s really up to us to keep our boundaries and not eat food that makes us terrible just to spare the feelings of others.
How do you respect your diet restrictions?
If I had to choose, I would rather hurt someone’s feelings than hurt my body. Was anyone else in such a situation? If so what did you do Leave a comment and let me know!
This post is an oldie, but goodie from the archives. I shared this recipe for asparagus salad with tomatoes and basil for the first time in 2010.
