It is very important that you do nothing other than breathe deeply and connect with your body during a bowel movement. If you do nothing other than breathe deeply during a bowel movement, you will automatically use your breath to relax your intestinal and anal sphincter muscles. The expansion and contraction of your diaphragm as you breathe in and out massages your intestines and stimulates peristalsis (rhythmic contractions of the intestinal wall).
When you’re focused on and connected to your body, you can follow your colon’s cues to change positions. Lean forward or backward, do a colon massage, lift or straighten your legs, etc.
If you sit there relaxed, breathing and massaging your colon, you will just get the “feeling” of doing something. This is where your body communicates with you, so do it even if you’re unsure or feel stupid! The more you listen to your body and respond to your hunches or feelings, the more your intuitive ability will grow and the more your body will “talk” to you.
It’s okay to take a hot drink into the bathroom, but don’t read or watch anything (magazines, TV, phone, photos, blackberries, etc.) – you must not engage your brain in any way other than tuning in and listening to your body.
If you suffer from peristaltic constipation, you may find it easier to pass stools if you place your feet on a child’s step stool (or on a few phone books). This raises your knees higher than your hips, closer to a squatting position – the ideal position for opening the rectal canal and facilitating rapid bowel movements. Also, make sure to use the colon massage method before and during bowel movements.
However, with stenosis constipation (narrowing, tightness or blockage of the rectum), it is important to be careful not to put pressure on the rectum to force it to open – so the above position probably won’t work for you. Instead, try the other positions in the video (which should also work well for peristaltic constipation).
Post your comments below and let me know if this video helped you – did it teach you something you hadn’t discovered yet?
