If your liver or lungs need support—perhaps you have a stubborn cough or phlegm problem that just won’t go away—you can always use herbal capsules or tinctures dropped in hot water (my favorite). But you can also use teas made from common food ingredients. Here are some easy recipes/teas to detoxify the liver and support the lungs – and make sure your ingredients are certified organic!
Note: These teas must be drunk on an empty stomach as they are medicinal teas.
Liver detox tea
- 1 cup hot water
- 1 bag of chamomile tea
- 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger (or 1/2 inch fresh ginger thinly sliced)
- Juice of half a lemon
Let it steep for 10 minutes, then add a few drops of honey. Drink 1 cup before bed on an empty stomach.
Tea to support the lungs (respiratory system).
- 1 cup hot water
- 1 bag of green tea
- 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger (or 1 inch fresh ginger, thinly sliced)
- Juice of half a lemon
- 1 mint leaf
- Pinch of cayenne pepper
Let it steep for 10 minutes, then add a few drops of honey or stevia/monk fruit to sweeten. Drink on an empty stomach.
Congestion tea (clears mucus and phlegm)
- 1 cup hot water
- 1 bag of green tea
- 1/4 tsp ground turmeric
- 1/4 tsp ground thyme
- Juice from half to a third of a lemon
- 1 mint leaf (tear into pieces)
Let it steep for 10 minutes, then add a few drops of honey or stevia/monk fruit to sweeten. Drink in the morning on an empty stomach. You can also drink it during the day, but on an empty stomach. Congestion can also be relieved by running your face under hot water in the shower or applying a hot compress to your sinuses.
You may also find this video with a tutorial on how to open the sinuses and Eustachian tubes helpful if you have been suffering from congestion for a while.
And if you’re just a tea lover like me, here are some of my favorites that we carry in the Shoppe.
