What is sour cream?
Sour cream is a dairy product made from the mixture of cream and lactic acid bacteria. The bacteria are responsible for the thick consistency and sour taste of the cream.
In addition to these two main ingredients, sour cream may also contain other thickeners or stabilizers such as gelatin or guar gum.
Sour cream is popular in Eastern and Central European cuisine, where it is used in soups and stews such as borscht. But as people migrated to other countries, sour cream became a well-known ingredient in salad dressings, toppings, dips, and even in baked goods like sponge cakes.
