A self-administered colon massage can be really helpful if you suffer from constipation, blockages in thickened areas of your colon, or blockages in diverticula (hollow pouches formed when the inner lining of the colon has been pushed through weakened areas of the colon wall) where food gets stuck and causes severe pain.

To treat diverticulitis blockages, perform the massage on an empty stomach and experiment with drinking two glasses of warm spring water fifteen minutes before the massage and then two more glasses immediately afterward to try to further flush out the stool particles.

*To make this massage really powerful, add a hot castor oil pack before or after the massage.

    Instructions for intestinal massage

Lie on your bed or couch with your knees bent and place the soles of your feet on the bed/couch.

Take several slow, deep breaths to relax and calm down. Lift up your shirt, unzip your pants, and start in the lower right quadrant of your stomach.

Stroke your fingertips upward until you reach the bottom of your ribcage.

Now stroke your hand left across the underside of your ribcage and then back down to the lower left quadrant of your abdomen. You have just roughly traced the course of your large intestine, starting at the end of the small intestine in a horseshoe shape until it empties into the rectal canal.

Follow the path of your colon in a calming, stroking motion (always in the same direction as described) and notice how you become more sensitive to where it is and how it feels.

The next step is to apply some pressure with your fingertips and move them in circular, probing motions as you follow the colon.

Experiment with both the tactile motion and the pressure you apply.

    Keep practicing

As you get to know your colon better, you will notice any areas that feel harder and/or thicker than the others. If your stool is stuck in a diverticulum (intestinal pouch), the pain and irritation should tell you where it is. Now focus on this area and massage gently with your fingertips.

Imagine gently breaking up the blocked stool, helping it move through the thickened area/out of the bag, and stroking/massaging it on the way to the rectal canal.

When you think you have cleared most of the blockage in the problem area, return to the lower right quadrant and begin massaging the colon. As you do this, move up toward your chest, across, and then down toward your lower left quadrant.

When you get back to the blockage, spend a little more time massaging the food particles through it and then continue to the rectal canal.

At any point in this process you may feel the need to defecate. If yes, sit on the toilet and continue the massage. Remember to breathe deeply and stay relaxed. Keep your abdominal and anal sphincters loose, open and relaxed.
