For the past few months, many people have been writing to me asking whether George’s Aloe Vera is suitable for making their own DIY hand sanitizer. Well, the answer is yes – however, it is BEST to wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds!
However, sometimes you’re out and about and you just can’t wash your hands at that moment. In this case, if I were to make my own hand sanitizer at home, I would much rather use hydrogen peroxide and essential oils as ingredients rather than abrasive isopropyl alcohol. Isopropyl is aggressive and dries out the skin. Here is the recipe I would use:
Natural aloe hand sanitizer
1/4 cup aloe vera juice
1 tbsp colloidal sliver
1 teaspoon 3% hydrogen peroxide
20 drops tea tree essential oil (or thyme, rosemary, or eucalyptus)
5-10 drops lemon essential oil (optional)
Pour into a spray bottle and shake well.
Spray enough onto your hands to get them wet and rub them together vigorously. Allow your hands to air dry.
*NOTE: I am not a fan of hand sanitizers and do not use them on myself or my children as our hands/skin have a natural microbe/bacteria population that protects us from opportunistic infections. When we continually kill off our native flora, our skin becomes vulnerable to infection. Does this sound familiar? YES, just like we avoid antibiotics because they destroy our healthy intestinal flora!
