    Every weight loss journey is different. Some will quickly notice a difference in the way you look, while for others it can be far more subtle changes.

    Either way, we all wish we could burn calories faster. It doesn’t matter whether we’re increasing our daily step count, going for a run in the morning or going to the gym several times a week.

    Put simply, your metabolism is the rate at which your body burns calories. When we are younger, our metabolism is often in full swing because we are full of energy and constantly on the move.

    This can often slow down as you get older. This is usually because we sit at desks or drive a car for most of the day, with minimal movement.

    But before we dive into thermal foods and those that sabotage your metabolism, it’s worth noting that your metabolism is mostly out of your control. Several factors play a role in determining this, including your age, your genes, and even your height.

    It may seem unfair to see a friend mock cake without putting on a pound, but unfortunately, that’s how our bodies can function! The metabolism can be very different from person to person.

    Which foods should you avoid?

    Now that we’ve talked about foods with high thermal effects, it is time to talk about those that you should avoid.

    • Beverages filled with sugar (including alcohol)
    • Soybean oil
    • Refined grains

    Yes! Unlike foods that stimulate your metabolism, there are some foods that can disrupt your metabolism. Most of these types of foods fall into “refined grains,” but soybean oil and sugar-filled beverages are common culprits.

    Instead of eating refined grains (like pasta, rice, and white bread), opt for whole grains. These will help you feel full and provide more nutrients.

    Processed, sugary foods provide empty calories with little value. So instead of working towards your body goals, fill a small hunger gap until about 20 minutes later!
