“I remember the first time my doctor insisted that I have surgery. This was pre-internet (so I had no way to do research on my own), and I asked my GI for more information. He invited me over with a stack of textbooks and his research reports, and you can be sure I took them home and read EVERYTHING.”
The statistic that hit me hardest was: “Every time you are opened for surgery, the disease spreads to at least three new places.”
And I thought to myself… This is crazy. They know this will worsen my condition, but they have no other solutions. They’re just trying to keep me alive and that’s why they want to do the operation.
Luckily that statistic is now outdated, but at the time I thought…this is RIDICULOUS! It was like throwing darts in the dark and hoping something would stick. I refused surgery but stuck with what the doctors told me for three years…until I said, “ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.” If I’m someone’s guinea pig, then I’m my own…”
